New report on economic aspects of smart lighting systems in LUCIA pilot cities

LUCIA has published a new report on the economic and business potential aspects of energy-efficient urban lighting. It summarises the related activities implemented by FCG Design and Engineering Ltd. (FCG) on behalf of the LUCIA project partner Posintra Ltd. during recent months. The main purpose of the report is to support the successful realization of the LUCIA pilot projects in Hamburg, Jūrmala, Porvoo, Tallinn and St. Petersburg. The report is based on thematic benchmarking and literature review as well as information collection through a series of local economic expert workshops during autumn 2019.

The authors conclude that budget constraints and lack of knowledge about project finance continue to affect most Baltic Sea region cities. This contributes to a slow diffusion of smart lighting in the region. In most cities, the authors also observe a lack of integrated approaches to the economics of smart lighting and smart city projects. One of their main recommendations is therefore to include different types of local stakeholders within the municipality as official pilot project partners.

The knowledge and information compiled during the economic assessment has also been summarised in a series of short and concise factsheets for decision makers and experts. These factsheets will be published on this website in March 2020.
